Frequently asked questions
So where exactly are you based?
As a sub unit of the New Zealand Army we are part of the Auckland/Northern Regiment with our headquarters in Grey Lynn, Auckland. The band
however has their weekly rehersals in Panmure, Auckland.
Where abouts does the band perform?
The band mainly performs in the greater Auckland region (Orewa to Pukekohe), however it is available to travel further if required.
I want the band for a 60th birthday - what kind of music can you do?
With a library of over 400 pieces, the band has the repertoire and the music to fill any requirement. If the band played
at your 60th, there would be plenty of dancing and it would be a night to remember for a long, long time.

I want to join the band, but I am only 17. What are my options?
Unfortunately you need to be 17 years of age or older to join the band and the Army. However, if you are under 17 years of age you are
still welcome to come along to our weekly rehersals to learn and gain experience until you are eligable to join. Unfortunately, during this time you will
be unable to partake in any band events.
Do I have to pass the Army tests to join the band?
To sign up to the band and Army you are required to undergo testing to ensure you meet the criteria (medical test, personality test etc) as if you
were joining any other area within the Army. You do not need to sit any tests to come along on a band night and join in.
I do not currently have an instrument. Did I read somewhere that you provide an instrument for free?
Yes, that is 100% correct. The band will provide you an instrument for free and also offers free mentoring. The only fee that
you will pay per year is the annual $20 membership to the Association which covers things such as new lyers, backing cards, hymm books, instrument wear and tear etc that
you may need replacing throughout the year.
If I join the band, when will I get my gun?
As the band is non combatant you will not receive a gun. However, the band does have stable training days where
you may be taught to make a found weapon safe, dismantle it, clean it and then reassemble it etc.
My Parents are worried I will be sent to war. Will I be forced to do so?
No - We are not trained for combat. We fall under the medical branch.
What grade do I need to be to join the band?
Grade 4 and above as a minimum however you will be assessed on your ability and sound. We will make every effort
to guide and mentor you into a well talented musician.
I have facial piercings and tattoos - Can I still join?
Facial piercings must be removed for every military duty. Facial tattoos are not accepted except for Ethnic or Religious reasons.
Do I need a full drivers licence to join the band?
No, there is no requirement to have a full licence to join the band. However, bare in mind that our rehersals finish at 10pm and drivers
with restricted licences must be off the road by 10pm. You will need your drivers licence to enter any bases during the time that your
ID card is being created.
